Learning

As part of the WWPS community, students benefit from quality, evidence-based learning across all areas of the NSW curriculum. Our passionate teachers, led by Erin Elsley, our Assistant Principal Curriculum & Instruction (APC&I), expertly tailor Literacy and Numeracy lessons to inspire, challenge, and support every student’s individual progress.

In our classroom, our teachers are experts at explicit teaching. This means we clearly tell students what they are learning, why it is important and how to do it step by step. Explicit teaching helps students understand new ideas by breaking them into smaller parts. Our excellent NAPLAN results, which have shown high growth in all areas, are a testament to the hard work and dedication of our teachers, support staff, and students.

Beyond these core subjects, our teachers deliver engaging lessons in History, Geography, Health, and Creative Arts. Additionally, students are provided with Science & Technology, and Sport classes, delivered by our specialist teachers who bring expert knowledge and a fresh energy to the learning experience. Don’t tell our classroom teachers, but these are usually the highlight of our students’ week!

Learning in action

Explicit Phonics Lessons

At our school, children are explicitly taught phonics through a comprehensive program designed to build strong foundations in reading and spelling. This approach provides every student with the skills they need to become confident, fluent readers and capable spellers.

Hands on Math Lessons

Our students have the opportunity to learn mathematical concepts through hands-on and engaging activities. This approach helps them develop a deep understanding of mathematics in an interactive and enjoyable way.

Technology

Our students have access to the latest technology, including 3D printers, robotics kits, and student devices, to enhance and complement their learning across all Key Learning Areas.

Strong NAPLAN results

Students at Wagga Wagga Public School have demonstrated significant growth in overall literacy and numeracy results in the recent NAPLAN assessments. This positive progress reflects their hard work, the dedication of their teachers, and the support of the wider school community.

Over the last few years, the school has focused on refining the development of foundational skills and knowledge in literacy. Strong Daily Review practices have been implemented school-wide in response to NAPLAN data. Through this approach—featuring regular, systematic, and repeated practice—students have made a real impact, achieving impressive growth in reading outcomes.

Wagga Wagga Public School is often above Statistically Similar Schools Group (SSSG) in NAPLAN reading and numeracy, and growth from Years 3 to 5 is positive.

NAPLAN (National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy) provides valuable insights into student learning progress and helps teachers tailor support to meet individual needs. The school’s continued commitment to personalised learning strategies is supporting ongoing improvement in student achievement.

Wagga Wagga Public School is dedicated to providing a supportive learning environment where every student can excel and reach their full potential.

Religious education

At our school, students can take part in special religious education (SRE) classes. These classes are delivered by approved providers.

When enrolling your child, you’ll be able to choose an option from the approved providers offered at our school.

Students not attending SRE are given supervised alternative meaningful activities.

You’re welcome to change your choice at any time. Just let us know in writing or use the online form (if available at our school).
